What is a digital identity?
Digital identities allow Monegasque nationals and residents to use their identity cards or residence permits to access online services.
You currently need an ID and password to log into the online services provided by the Government and Monaco Town Hall, but going forward, the State of Monaco is making available an easy, secure way for you to access these services.
With the help of a simple PIN, you are able to use your Monegasque identity card or residence permit to confirm your identity when taking advantage of services offered by the public authorities and private partners.
The online service can identify and recognise you because you have logged in with your digital identity and a PIN code that is unique to you.
This ensures that you enjoy maximum security when you are using online services.
How does it all work?
New secure cards mean that all Monegasque nationals and residents who wish to do so can activate their digital identity with the staff member who issues their card or by using one of the self-service interactive terminals available at the Maison du Numérique, at Monaco Town Hall and in the Residency Section.
Your new card contains your digital identity in the form of an electronic certificate. Once activated, it is recognised by organisations which offer online services. Your card allows you to be identified with certainty when using online services operated by partners, and will make it easier to carry out administrative procedures.
You can also use it to sign documents digitally on your computer, and your signature will have legal standing.
In practical terms, when your new card is issued, you will choose your own PIN and card reader (USB) will be issued so that you can use your card from your PC. Once you have installed the special software (click here to find out more), you can make full use of your card and PIN to verify your identity and sign documents.
What are the advantages of digital identity in Monaco?
- Enables positive identification: a digital identity provides confirmation that a user is genuinely who they claim to be online. The information associated with the user, including their surname, first name, date and place of birth, can be verified.
- Saves time for users: a digital identity allows a user to prove their identity online, meaning that they do not need to visit the organisation in person. Procedures such as requesting a certificate, making a sworn statement online or electronically signing documents can all be done from your PC at home.
- Reduces the number of different usernames and passwords required to access the various online services offered by the Government, Monaco Town Hall or private organisations.
- Offers better protection for your personal data and clear management of user consent.
In addition, everyone can choose whether or not to activate their digital identity.
